DIY Lego (&Train) Table

At long last, I am here to share all of the nitty gritty details of how we put together Kay's Christmas present,
the DIY Lego Table. (Uhm, uh... Fah-inally!!!)

And really I have little excuse for getting this up so late. It was pretty much the simplest project ever. My living room curtains were harder to construct than this bad boy! Which... might not be saying much coming from me (admittedly)... but no, really. This project is/was easy-peasy.

And yet, here we are. Two months later and just barely getting the tutorial up. My life has been a little hectic. Oh well. Let's dive into to some Lego Table makin'!

For Kay's birthday last year we scored a deal on our local craigslist. We bought the train table above  for a whoppin' $20.00. And it was in pretty good condition. The top of the train table is painted with a landscape, but the bottom, as you can see, was nice, smooth, and boring.

Perfect for a little updating! ;]

We started out the process by measuring our train table insert. Lego.com was selling their 10" x 10" base plates for $4.99 each.  From the size of our table top, we would need about 15 base plates. Not exactly chump change, but considering the size of the Lego Table we'd be getting, plus the fact it would be dual purpose (it's a train table too, remember!), we figured it was more than worth it.

12 of the base plates would fit on the table whole, and the last 3 would need to be cut to fit.

To cut our base plates to size, we simply used our craft scissors. You'll need to make sure they are sharp, otherwise it will start to stress the plastic and turn it white. Sharp scissors means smooth, (in this case) blue edges.

To make sure we were cutting them to the correct size, we laid the last three lego mats down as if they would fit on the table whole. Where they overlapped with the previous laid lego mats we made a mark (using our fingernails) along that row. Now we knew which row to cut along.

Once we were finished cutting out all of the custom pieces for our table, we laid down all of the base plates to make sure they would fit. To ensure we were spacing them correctly, we used Lego pieces to connect them in the corners. This way, we could make sure that all of the Lego pieces would still fit, even in between the adjoining mats.

As you can see from above, the mats are not completely flush with each other. There is a teeny tiny space in between each of them. For this reason, you may consider spray painting your table, the color of the base plate, before you start to put it together. For us, it really wasn't a huge deal. We don't really notice the table showing underneath all that much. So we decided to skip painting the table below.

Once we had finished laying our mats down to make sure that they all fit correctly we began the gluing process, starting with a corner piece. For our adhesive, we decided on Gorilla Glue, to make sure that the mats would be stuck on there for good.

One thing to watch out for with Gorilla Glue is that it expands when it dries. You don't want to put the glue too close to the edge of the base plates, otherwise it will bubble and seep out through the spaces in between the mats.

We were pretty careful with ours, and it still seeped up in a few places. In those areas, we just used a butter knife to scrape it off.

If you don't want to mess with it, Liquid Nails might be another good option. And from what I know of it, I don't believe that Liquid Nails expands the way that Gorilla Glue does.

Again, as we were gluing and pressing our Lego mats onto the table, we connected the corners of the mats with Lego Pieces, to keep the correct spacing while it dried.

It took us about an hour and a half total to put the whole table together, including all of the cutting. Glue, press, connect with a lego... rinse, wash, repeat.

Like I said, easy peasy!

Once we were finished gluing all of the mats down, all we had left to do was let it dry. We let it sit over night. In the morning, we flipped it back over so that the train table side was on top. And there it sat, all stealth and awesome like, until Christmas.

So, it has been two months now since we finished this, and the Lego table is still quite the hit! To be honest, at first Kay wasn't thrilled with all the Lego's he opened up on Christmas morning. I don't think he really knew what they were.

All it took, however, to change his indifference was to open them up and start playing with them. And from that point on... it's been Lego Table , rather than train table, about 9 times out of 10.

Is it silly that that makes me a bit sad? Sniff. Poor Thomas!

Oh well, the point is that the project was a success! And I've got one happy little builder on my hands. Happy DIYing to ya'll! And a Happy Valentine's Day too!

Playroom Updates...

Well, I am finally on the mend! Thank goodness! Ny-quil and I have been on a little too close of terms lately for my taste. But oh, what a joyous (albeit brief) union it was. Now if I could just keep these cold sores in check. I've got two of them, because apparently it wouldn't have been a party if there was only one...

Okay, all sickness aside, while I haven't been keeping the posts updated... I have been messing around with my the kids playroom. Again.

But it was just too fun not to! Post-Christmas means new toys, new possibilities, and usually... a lot of rearranging to make it all fit. ;]

Look who got a play kitchen for Christmas! And oops, I'm still not finished with Emmie's Market. I have some spray painting left to do (probably white!) and the grocery ads to put up, but Em has enjoyed playing with it all nonetheless!

And check out that Lego table! Bah. I'm giddy excited about how that one turned out! Expect a how-to post on it soon!

I was also crazy excited about these cute little metal pails I found in the dollar section at Target. Be still my soul. They came with the chalkboard stickers already attached! I instantly knew that I needed them. Now I just wish I had bought about...500 more. You think Target might carry these babies online?

Oh yah. Did I forget to mention I moved the art shelves? They used to be on the wall that currently houses our new play kitchen (which may or may not be getting a paint job soon, we'll see...).

By the way. Ignore that random white hutch sitting by the book shelves. I hope to discard of that soon. As soon as I can afford a peg board and some Azar display bins anyways. Which, you know... could be a few years from now. I'll cross my fingers otherwise, ;].

And thanks to my sweet husband's parents, we were able to add some more Playmobil to our collection this Christmas. We bought this set to go along with the Children's Petting Zoo we bought last year for Emmie's birthday. Thank you Grandma and Grandpa!

I also finally got around to setting up the dress up station and mounting the mirror. It had all been stuffed into the dress up bin and stored in the toy closet since we switched rooms. It was time for that to change! Now we just need to get around to purging and updating all of our costume supplies.

The toy closet only saw minor changes. Really all that happened here was that I moved out the tall baker's rack, and moved the dress up bin out (as previously mentioned).

Well, there's a quick peak into a few of the changes we've made around here.

We have by no means "arrived" exactly at where we want this playroom to someday be.  But it's functional. And the kids love it. And even though it may not be cute, or coordinated... I love it too. It has become a place for us to explore, create, pretend, practice (sharing, manners, cleaning), read, and play.

And, maybe someday, I'll finally be able to add all the cute curtains and accent pillows my little heart could desire. But for now, I'll take it slow and steady, and enjoy the memories we are investing in.

What has been your best investment over this last year? How will you invest your time or money differently for 2013? Or will you stick to what you did in 2012? I love January. And I love New Years resolutions! I'd love to hear what's on your list!

Christmas Gift Ideas for Our Kids

So, no lie... I've been pretty stoked about planning and executing our Christmas Plans for this upcoming December the 25th. I might have started planning our whole holiday season back in August...

Just maybe. ;]

But, it was too fun not to! I love putting things together for my kids, and the holidays are just such a magical time for children. I love promoting that magic, and I also love spoiling my children. And the Holiday season is one of the few times in our family that we allow ourselves to splurge.

Well, Holidays...and Birthdays.

But other than that, we tend to be tight-wad Thompsons over here! (No offense if your last name is Thompson... it just rhymed ;])

So, when Holidays(&Birthdays!) come along, we are kind of methodical about what we want to get the children.  It is one of the few times we really have the money to get them something good, so we want to make sure that it is quality, both in how it is made...and how it is received by the kiddos.

So far the kids have building blocks, a light table, art shelves and supplies, balls, playmobil, playdough, puzzles, trains, a train table, an art table...and the list could go on.

To help expand and diversify that list...we decided this year to make Emmie her very own market... and Kay a lego table.

And I just made an awning for Emmie's market, and I am SO stinkin' excited about it!!! Like maybe happy dance excited. Just maybe!

I made it out of a card board box that Kay's lego table supplies had come in. I cut the box in half and painted it using my kid's craft paint. Then I attached it to the wall using my husband's screwdriver and a few screws.

What can I say? I'm a borrower! ;]

Anyways, I kind of like that the stripes are only on the one flap, but I'm not entirely sure. Do you think I should finish the stripes through out or leave it as is? I'm a little bit worried that finishing the sides of the awning with stripes might make it too busy. I dunno. Opinions?

For the actual market stand, we are using an old T.V. Center that we found sitting outside by our apartment complex's dumpster. Pretty classy, I know ;].  But, I figure, with a fresh coat of paint and a little bit of elbow grease, it will end up looking pretty cute.

I especially love all the different levels. The plan is to paint it with chalkboard paint, and then add some wicker/wooden baskets with play food, a basket with some fake flowers, and put up some vintage grocery ad's on the wall behind it.

I mean, how cute are these? Really!

I'd also like to add wooden letters above the awning, with a store name like "Emmie's Market", or something personal like that.

As far as Kay's lego table, we bought 15 of these lego mats from lego.com, and will be gorilla gluing them down on the underside of his train table top. That way it'll be dual purpose. If you're interested, I'll put together a step-by-step tutorial on how we assemble it all. In the meantime, I just need to find a day to sit down and do it!

I'm thinking next date night.  ;]

We also bought Kay a lego set to go along with it. Not to mention the free holiday set we got as part of a promotion when we ordered it all online. Not too shabby ;].

Anywho's it should make for a pretty special Christmas morning. I'm just excited to see all of our ideas finally start to come together. They have been floating around in our brains and conversations for far too long. I can't wait for them all to be a reality!

How 'bout all you lovely folks? Are you doing a hand-made Christmas? A store-bought? Or a little bit of in-between?  Ours is definitely an in-betweener. Hopefully, it will be a good mix of convenience, quality, and sentiment. I'll let you know ;]

Man, I really seem to like those winky faces. I gotta keep myself in check. Totally resisting the urge to add another winky face after this sentence.
